Upon Breanna Sarver’s decision to bring a new furry companion into her life, she turned to the vast realm of online options in search of a typical, exuberant golden retriever. Little did she know that her search would lead her down an unexpected path. As fate would have it, she stumbled upon Casey, a charming canine with an unmistakable charm, even though she was born with merely three legs.
Instantly captivated by Casey’s image, Sarver’s heart was filled with warmth and conviction that this delightful pup was destined to be her loyal companion. Driven by this newfound connection, she embarked on a two-hour journey to pick up Casey and officially embrace her as a beloved member of the family.
From the moment Sarver and Casey met, a deep bond was forged, transcending the physical limitations that marked Casey’s unique disposition. Inseparable and united in their adventures, there was an undeniable joy in their togetherness. Casey, with her undying zest for life, never displayed the slightest inkling of awareness regarding her dissimilarity; content in embracing her role as both Sarver’s dog and best friend.
When asked about her, Sarver expressed that the most fitting word to describe her beloved companion would undoubtedly be “happy.” From accompanying her to work with an infectious joy, to eagerly greeting every individual she encountered, to delightfully returning home at the end of the day, and even relishing in the simple pleasure of selecting her favorite toy from Petco, this four-legged friend radiated perpetual happiness. Sarver fondly described her as remarkably devoted and nurturing, as she had been an indispensable presence in her life for almost a year, an ever-present partner. Inspired by the remarkable impact Casey had made, Sarver and her boyfriend readily decided to open their home to another three-legged dog, a delightful shepherd mix named Harper, with the intention of extending their support to others in need. The coexistence of both Casey and Harper in their household was harmonious, and life seemed to be filled with boundless joy – but then, a heartbreaking tragedy struck just a month later.
Regrettably, Casey met with a dreadful accident shortly after Harper was taken in as a member of the family. Harper’s mother felt overwhelmed by the tragedy and her parents were left devastated. Picking up the phone, Sarver contacted the woman who had facilitated Casey’s adoption, delivering the heart-wrenching news of the unfortunate incident only two days later. While the woman shared in her sorrow, she had some uplifting news to share as well: Casey’s sibling, who had been born with only three legs, was in search of a loving home.
Sarver confessed, “In the aftermath of Casey’s traumatic demise, I never imagined that I would find myself ready to welcome another dog into our family anytime soon.” However, life has a peculiar way of surprising us. Immediately after Casey’s passing, Sarver wasted no time and journeyed to bring Casey’s brother, named Chance, into their home, a mere four days after their tragic loss.
Reflecting on this decision, Sarver expressed, “Choosing to bring Chance into our lives was undoubtedly one of the most rewarding choices I have ever made. Amidst my grief, he offered solace in ways that exceeded my wildest expectations.”
Sarver was amazed at how closely Chance resembled Casey as he grew up. They had the same personalities, features, smiles, and little quirks. By taking in Chance, it felt like Casey was still alive and with them every day.
“It’s easy to forget that they’re not the same dog,” Sarver confessed. “No one else could understand, but through Chance, I feel like Casey’s spirit is still here with us.”
Chance played a significant role in helping Sarver cope with the loss of Casey. Soon after, they added another three-legged dog to their family – a blind puppy named Oakley. From then on, their furry companions became known as the “tripawd squad.”
People often wonder how this couple manages to take care of multiple three-legged dogs, but for them, it comes naturally. These dogs are simply part of their family.
Contrary to popular belief, the couple doesn’t face as many challenges as one might think when it comes to caring for these three-legged dogs. These dogs can still run, jump, swim, and play just as well as their four-legged counterparts. The only noticeable difference is that they tend to tire out more quickly. Hopping requires more energy and puts more weight on their remaining legs. While the couple loves taking their dogs on outings, they have to be cautious not to overexert them.
In addition to managing their energy levels, the couple also keeps a close watch on their dogs’ weight. They understand that excess weight can strain their joints unnecessarily. To prevent future joint problems, they make sure their dogs stay thin and active. They also provide daily joint supplements for added support.
The trio of dogs in the tripawd squad share a special bond and demonstrate remarkable understanding of one another’s needs. Whenever one of them is unwell, the other two rush to provide comfort and support. Their caring and affectionate behavior never fails to amaze their owners.
According to Sarver, it was evident that Chance, the stick-loving dog, recognized Oakley’s blindness even before they did. In a heartwarming gesture, Chance would allow Oakley to borrow his precious sticks, holding them up for him to chew on so he wouldn’t misplace them.
Originally, Sarver and her boyfriend hadn’t planned on adopting three-legged dogs, but after witnessing Casey’s unwavering love and the happiness these dogs bring, they have embraced their mission. The couple is excited to welcome a new member, Willow, into the tripawd squad. They see it as a way to honor Casey’s memory and watch their family grow.
Sarver further expressed that these tripods possess an amazing quality of never dwelling on their disabilities or differences; instead, they embrace life with utmost joy and appreciation.
