Baxter expressed how heartbreaking it was for him to witness a dog in such a terrible state. The poor canine was tossed into an enclosure that was rarely attended, with visitors only dropping by once every few months at most. Although the dog had managed to free herself from a blanket that previously covered her face, and the rope that restricted her front legs, she remained bound tightly in the back. The ropes dug deep into her flesh, and understandably, she was frightened at first when Baxter approached her, shaking and refusing to come near him. But with time, he gained her trust by offering her water from a bucket and extending his hand to pet her. Baxter also took action by cutting off the twine that tied her back legs and neck and shared his sandwich with her before calling animal control. After seeing the pictures of the malnourished dog, animal control contacted Zack Skow, the founder of Marley’s Mutts rescue group, which specializes in rescuing abandoned, abused dogs, and those scheduled for euthanasia in the local shelter. According to Skow, this type of case was not unusual for their group as they’ve encountered all kinds of horrific scenarios involving animal abuse.
Baxter, when speaking to Huffington Post, expressed how wonderful it was to see Dora looking amazing and to know that she would recover. The AT&T newsletter featured Dora’s story, which led Kevin P. Smith, a senior technology project manager in the Bay area, to apply for adoption. The following day, Smith’s wife Karen and their other rescue dog, Dante, drove to pick up Dora.
Dora was taken in by some kind-hearted individuals who gave her a name and provided her with the necessary veterinary treatment. Unfortunately, due to her poor physical condition, she wasn’t considered for a foster home, and instead remained with Skow. However, after only a short period of time, Dora underwent an incredible transformation and became a completely different dog. The most remarkable thing is that her rescuer was able to reunite with her later on in what can only be described as a fairytale ending. Baxter was dispatched to Skow’s residence, where he got to see how Dora had flourished.
Hope is having the time of her life these days. She gets to go on walks at the park, play with her new furry siblings, and receive all the love and attention she deserves from her human family. Her past experiences of mistreatment and neglect are a thing of the past as she now represents hope and resilience for animals in similar situations. Hope’s journey from darkness to light is a testament to the transformative power of love and the positive impact a caring home can have on rescued animals.
