Becoming a police dog is a prestigious role that demands hard work and commitment. In order to join the K-9 unit, dogs must attend the police dog academy where they are trained to handle tough criminals.
In 2016, a young German Shepherd named Gavel was among 40 police puppies in training in Queensland, Australia. With a pedigree linked to working police dogs, Gavel seemed destined for a career busting criminals with the Queensland Dog Squad.
Despite high hopes, Gavel surprised everyone by showing more interest in cuddles than apprehensions. Ultimately, he didn’t pass the police academy, but he found a better fit that allowed him to be true to himself and live his best life.
Transitioning from a police dog drop-out to a cherished Vice-Regal Dog, Gavel’s story is a heartwarming tale of finding where you truly belong.
In April 2016, Gavel arrived at the Government House in Queensland with dreams of joining the prestigious Queensland Police Service Dog Squad. After a year of training and receiving his official uniform, it became clear that Gavel’s true calling was not in patrols but in receiving pets and treats. Despite not meeting the requirements for police work, Gavel had won over the hearts of everyone at the Government House.
Fortunately, the Governor decided to make Gavel a permanent part of the family and created a new role for him in February 2017. Gavel was officially appointed as Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog, a position that suited his friendly and loving nature perfectly.
He even gave his personal contract a paw stamp of approval! How adorable!
Gavel’s main responsibilities included assisting the Honorable Paul de Jersey, the Governor, with essential constitutional, ceremonial, and community tasks. These duties ranged from greeting guests and leading tours to attending formal ceremonies, all while exuding undeniable cuteness.
During special occasions, Gavel proudly donned his custom-made ceremonial coat adorned with the state emblems of Queensland. As Queensland’s official Vice-Regal Dog, Gavel went through four ceremonial coats as he outgrew them, with earlier versions featuring the insignia of the Queensland Police Service.
This lovable pup has captured the hearts of everyone at the Government House and has shown that there are many paths to success. His journey serves as a valuable lesson for all of us, as sometimes failure is just a stepping stone to success.
Gavel continued to enjoy his fabulous life at one of Brisbane’s most prestigious locations, proudly wearing the symbols of the State he faithfully serves.
Gavel wasn’t just the inaugural Vice-Regal dog of the State; he was also the main character in a popular illustrated children’s book. The book traces his adventures as he navigates through life, trying to find where he truly belongs and striving towards his ultimate dream.
In October 2021, the official Instagram page of the Governor of Queensland announced that Gavel, the German Shepherd, had retired after serving faithfully for 40 dog years. He has finally hung up his coat and is enjoying a well-deserved break from duty.
Throughout his time in service, Gavel was showered with love not only from His Excellency and Mrs. de Jersey, but also from his handler and companion who will continue to look after him during his retirement. Gavel truly captured the hearts of everyone he encountered, and even though he didn’t fulfill his original role as a police dog, he gracefully carried out his vice-regal duties.
Gavel excelled at welcoming guests and making them feel at ease. And if you’re wondering, Gavel is still happily living on the Government House property in Brisbane, enjoying a well-deserved break filled with love, treats, and plenty of pats.
